Radio nets
Amateur radio is all about talking. Hams like to talk; "nets" are a regular forum to talk about a specific topic on the air.
There are formal emergency nets such as skywarn, and ARES/RACES which handles disasters of all sorts. There are traffic nets, dedicated to passing written messages ("traffic") between hams and non-hams, coordinated as the National Traffic System (N TS) which operates under methods and practices developed over the years by ARRL. Finally, there are informal social nets of all sorts.

Local HAM nets[edit]
If your net is not listed here, please add it!
SkyWarn[edit]
Real time monitoring of dangerous weather by citizens communicating with the National Weather Service
Note: you do not need to be a ham to join SkyWarn; non-hams can participate via telephone. Check your local weather office for SkyWarn training sessions for more details.

Hurricane nets[edit]
*** PLEASE NOTE ***
During hurricanes, the following frequencies should be kept clear of normal traffic. Do NOT transmit on these frequencies during a hurricane unless you have a hurricane related emergency or you are capable of helping with such emergency. Most local nets will NOT accept help unless you are registered ARES member that has cleared a background check. Some roles also require certification that you have taken certain ICS courses. Check individual club pages for details.
If you hear an emergency that you think you can help with by going there, DO NOT SELF DEPLOY. First talk to the ARES group and get clearance. Usually registered ARES members who deploy with clearance are given security badges and are covered by the club's worker's compensation insurance, and emergency workers in the receiving area are notified to expect your arrival.
Monitoring of these frequencies during emergencies may prove interesting.
Local ARES repeaters[edit]
Note: During emergencies, some or all of these repeaters will run a directed net. In a directed net, all traffic must go through net control and be given permission by net control to continue. Emergency nets in formal mode do not accept non-emergency traffic and you should not check in unless you are directly involved in the emergency or are a member and can volunteer to be involved.
