SAME alerts are used over the air on the National Weather Radio (NWR) system, and the Emergency Alert System (EAS). NWR has its own broadcast stations around the country. NWR is mostly Marine orriented in FL but does provide useful info on land. EAS is broadcasted over FM and AM stations along with over the air TV. The Wireless Emergency Alert system (WEA) is very similar to the aforementioned alert systems, but operates over the cellular network.

Full message format

An EAS message contains these elements, in this transmitted sequence:

1. Header.
2. Attention signal — Sent if any message is included (normally sent with all messages except RWT on broadcast radio/TV); must be at least eight seconds long.
   • Single 1050 Hz audio tone used by NOAA Weather Radio.
   • Combined 853 and 960 Hz tones for broadcast radio/TV.
3. Message — An audio message. The FCC permits encoded video or text in lieu of an audio message, but neither are implemented in practice.
4. Tail — (Preamble) NNNN (EOM).
