ARC Radios quick reference

Quick Reference Guides for using ARC's various radios. If you know what you're doing, don't worry about this.

This is fodder for the one page radio quick reference sheets.

• Each card should include front panel diagram with (at least) the following labeled
  • Power / band / mode / vfo
  • RF and AF gain
  • TX power
  • tuning steps / lock
  • filter and DSP settings, bandpass filters, notch
  • antenna selection and automatic tuning (if available)
• also include instructions for radio start up settings adjustments and anything special

Icom IC-756

Power-on

1) Ensure power cable is connected, and power supply is rated for minimum 30 amps

2) Plug in antenna to SO-239 port (Antenna 1 is closest to power connector)

3) Switch on power supply and turn on radio

4) Select ANT num corresponding to selected port

Configuring for TX

1) Select band/frequency you are licensed for

2) Turn RF power knob counter-clockwise to minimum

3) Set AF (Inner knob) to full

4) Set RF/SQL (Outer knob) high enough to hear static

5) Configure P.Amp (Preamp) as needed

6) Ensure microphone is connected, and digital hookups (rear) are disconnected

7) Turn mic gain clockwise to full

Transmitting

1) Set meter to SWR

2) Toggle TRANSMIT, or use microphone push-to-talk

3) Talk, and monitor SWR never exceeds 2

4) Set meter to ALC

5) Speak, adjusting mic gain until ALC is in ideal range

6) Set meter to PO

7) Turn RF power clockwise to full

8) Ensure the frequency is clear, and call CQ such as " 'CQ', 'CQ', [CALLSIGN]"

9) Ensure PO reaches requested power level

10) You are clear to begin operating

Controls notes:

• Each button has two functions; secondary function activated by holding.
  • Please don't change config options (accessed by holding the menu button) as many of these may cause the radio to not function correctly
    • The menu and config menu options can be scrolled through with the small sub knob on the right and value changed with the large tuning knob
    • Pressing display while in the menu gives menu help
  • holding display button toggles meters between ''ALC/Signal strength'' and ''SWR/Power''
• The small knobs on the inner left side have 3 functions. The two primary functions are toggled by pressing the knob, the third function is activated by press holding the knob.
• DSP controls are toggled by pressing the button, modified by holding the button
  • NB fixes static crashes, both knobs adjust parameters
  • NR reduces background noise, only sub adjusts
  • NOTCH filters solid tones (like tuning); holding button allows manual adjustment instead of auto
• For best results, in digital modes, change mode from SSB to DATA and possibly maximize bandwidth
• Steve's radio does not have a sub-reciver or a voice recorder. The voice recorder buttons have been repurposed as macros:
  • M1 will load the current band's (extra) phone edges into vfo / sub
  • Holding M2-M4 will save a memory for the current band, pressing it will recall that memory
  • Holding RIT will toggle between the front mic and the back mic (such as a Logitech computer desk mic) and reset mic gain
  • Holding XIT will jump to the menu option to adjust display brightness
  • Memories (M->V) 10-40 have been preloaded with PSK and WWV frequencies to make quickly checking band conditions easy
