Winlink is an amateur radio email messaging system that (on VHF) uses the Packet Radio protocol.

APRS also uses Packet Radio, and is specialized for sending telemetry like GPS location, weather data, and text messaging.

Both of these use identical hardware with different high level software and different frequencies.

Hardware[edit | edit source]

  • VHF radio that can handle the duty cycle
  • bidirectional sound card interface for the radio with PTT control (AIOC)
  • computer (pi, desktop?)
  • VHF antenna
  • 35w vhf amp (not currently in use)

  • The winlink server software is linux based.

    • APRS <-> discord user DM (map call sign to username / whitelist)
